Is there life other than here? A possible answer

If there's an obsession that I have it's astronomy. To me nothing is as amazing, mind boggling and limitless.

I'm not sure if you share my enjoyment of staring at a clear night sky, and watching the twinkling stars. Looking at such a star filled sky logically begs the question, is there someone else looking at the sky from their planet and wondering if there is anyone else out there. Which brings me to the topic of this post: is there life somewhere else? I'll tell you right now, I don’t have an answer but I will speculate with the help of a simple equation I ran across about 5 years ago. Before you continue reading this, I ask you to look at the picture above and give the question a bit of thought. Every dot and bright spot in the picture represents a star, just like our sun, perhaps with little planets orbiting them as well. What makes us so special that our tiny planet is the only planet to harbour life from this vast ocean of matter? Or are we not special after all? I believe that our planet represents one of many planets harbouring life throughout the universe. Here’s a little (and simple) calculation to show how many different "advanced civilization" exist in our galaxy alone. An advanced civilization is defined as one that is technical, in other words possesses technology. The calculation is statistical, here are the different parts of the equation and what they represent:

- N, the number of advanced civilizations in the Milky Way
- N*, the number of stars in the Milky Way
- fp, the fraction of stars which have planetary systems
- ne, number of planets in a given system that are ecologically suitable for life (not too cold, too hot…)
- f1, fraction of otherwise suitable planets on which life actually arises
- fi, fraction of inhabited planets on which an intelligent form of life evolves
- fc, fraction of planets inhabited by intelligent beings on which a communicative technical civilization develops
- fL, the fraction of a planetary lifetime graced by a technical civilization

The equation is then N = (N*) (fp) (ne) (f1) (fi) (fl) where the brackets represent multiplication. It is important to note that just from reading the parameters of the equation you can see that the calculation is pretty thorough and well thought of.

So what are the numbers to be placed into the equations?

Well, we know N*, which is 4 X 10^11 (four with 11 zeros after it). Fraction of stars with planets is approximated at a third of all stars. We estimate ne, to be 2, just by looking at our own planetary system. We estimate f1 to be a third. The estimate of fi and fc are combined to equal 0.01. Which means that only one percent of planets on which life arises eventually produce a technical civilization. Lastly we estimate fL as one millionth of a percent. Which can be seen from our civilization, it took us hundreds of thousands of years to develop a highly technical civilization.

Multiplying all those numbers together we get about 10 civilizations. That is, 10 civilizations in the Milky Way alone. Consider now that there are 100 billion galaxies in the universe, and the number of civilizations becomes too much to comprehend. By the way, if you wonder how the estimates in the above paragraph were made, I can send you the full details or post them on the blog.
It took the author of Cosmos about 4 pages to describe what I have compressed in the last two paragraphs.

You may ask the question: so why haven't seen any of those life forms. I can think of two simple answers. One is that the furthest we have (closely) investigated for life is Mars, which is very close, especially when we talk about astronomical distances. The second explanation is that the universe is too large for two civilizations of actually meet by sheer coincidence. One other explanation is that civilizations may not use 'earthly' ways of communication, such as radio, or sound waves. So we may not be able to detect those civilizations.

Anyhow, I thought I would bring you into my mind and my interest. I hope it wasn’t too boring. But I do want to know what you think. Did the above information change your mind about life elsewhere? Strengthen your belief? Left you snoring out of boredom? Does any one care about this issue? Isn’t it boring to be the only existing life out there?

  1. Well I found that quite impressive and interesting and no i didn't fall asleep! As for other life out there, well i personally believe that there are simple forms of life on other planets but that's it, I don't really believe that there are other complicated living beings like humans living elsewhere, but space exploration is still in it's early stages so I may be surprised by their findings in the future. Anyway it's cool that you're so interested in astronomy, I don't know many people who are...

  2. Dina, I'm impressed with your insight. You are absolutly right, the universe is probably reaming with simple life. I think within our life times we will witness the discovery of at least one life form outside earth.

  3. Yes Eman, if there are other life forms out there they would be drastically different from what we're used to seeing, especially since environments shapes organisms, and most environments we've encountered are different from Earth's. By the way did you know that today is Earth day.. how appropriate!

  4. I think it's a world wide event.. All school kids collect garbage today, and even employees take a break to clean up

  5. Rami, in the calculation each term works like a filter, reducing the number of possibilities by a certain amount. When all the numbers are multiplied, the total number of possibilites get filtered all the way from 4X10^11 possibilities to ten. I hope this helped

  6. Omar, I m impressed by ur collective knowledge, and ur command of the English language, the excellent way u come through, in ur postings, and specially the dialogue u take with those who leave comments ,you are a master in communications.
That’s why you get serious comments from serious readers.
    because you just don’t BS>
What surprises me Omar, when I read your comments on the postings of other Bolggers, you become metamorphosised, 180degs .
You start thinking in Arabic and writing in English, boyish&shallow .
Omar you are good, but don’t try to be nice on the account of your seriousness. Don’t post prior reviewing not for mistakes but for style, Try writing a draft, if you like it!!!Poste Ur comments...
One more thing Omar, your ID, is your self, lose the pick with Kufeeea.I will keep coming for knowledge at Ur site .Take Care.

  7. Thanks for your comments Anonymous. Anyone who knows me in person knows that I have two distinct sides, the serious and the not-so-serious. My blog reflects both those sides, although the past few postings have been more serious than otherwise. If we were to have a conversation for the first time, you would never know that I could ever be serious, I tend to be less seirous at first. People tell me all the time "I didn't know you had this (serious) side." Which shows your comment is in the right spot. I think being serious all the time is not healthy, and at the same time taking everything like a joke is not satisfying, I try to keep a balance.

As for the picture, to tell you the truth it's the best picture I could find. I didn't go out of my way to pick one with the kouffiah. At the same time. I'm proud of my culture, and it's one way to show it. In the media these days, the koufiah is tied with terrorists. You see terrorist all the time on CNN wearing kouffiahs. Through my picture, I hope to show the tiny amount of visitors that I get, that you do not have to be a terrorsit to wear such items/patterns. So I will keep that as my picture for the time being. Thanks for stopping by, and I hope future posts will meet your expectations. By The way I read your comments very seriously. and I took them into consideration. You have valid points.

  8. It is me again, tnx Ur answer, point to the dot, will taken. We both enjoy the same roots.
Same pride, mine to be discovered by others! Not published up front, each to his way I do respect urs

Now about the universe old topic “is there another life out there”. ?tests so far tells either there was one but vanished ,and the findings based on carbon and other vegetated residues X+ tri yrs ago, that’s in accordance to our advanced scientific code and means, yet excessive temperatures and lack of our vital life standerd means ,negate presences of life even as a minute organism.

If we to divert from our will established means and theory standards, and look at two possibilities:
    A) could we be looking for something that dose existin ,but not in accordance to our stabdreds and forms, and has its own structures, and lives right under our nose ,but it is in another structure ,and compiled of a simpler quality .but because we have a different analytical advanced technology we just cant find it .
    B) When we talk space it is ,a complexed issues of proximity of time and distance .along with a huge multiples of planets ,galaxies, smillirer to ours .
Could it be that, we are traveling parallel, or on equal parallel line aligned to one another?
And simply we don’t meet unless we change our time/speeds relativity, and then we meet?

Just a thought to ponder by, my motive is theoretical, and search based on creative approach, to look in an apposite direction.

    Tnx again Ur Compatriot

  9. Just another Comment~ What My belief is, since We have not found not even a tiny single little form of life, than the answer would definately be a 'No' to your question. The day We find at least one single tiny eency weency clue that there is life, then I will be wrong. Belief or no belief, no life exists until proven guilty? No equation/theory/opinion/belief can prove life exists other than the Earth that You live on. The mind that you have as you come up with an equation like that, is our phsycological world, already showing that what we have cant compare to anything else. Goodluck in all your work that I hope you succeed in!
P.S. I love to look out into the night sky and see the beauty that has been given to Us!

  10. Hello, my name is 0mar but not the one who made this site. Today's date is 01/12/2011, 7:55pm. I came upon this site while performing an occult ritual. I asked a question during the ritual that led me to this site. The more modern occultist now use the world wide web to ask the unknown questions.

The math on if life exist on other universes doesn't fail. If you really concentrate and ask yourself if life exist elsewhere, we'll according to the math, It does. To complicate things more multiply the number of civilizations
that possibly exist in this dimension to the other multiple
universes and the numbers get huge.

The way I landed on this site is still bobbling my mind.

A physics professor by the name of Ronald Mallett is now designing the first time machine. He believes that time travel is around the corner.

  12. The bible teached us when god told the human being ” dust you were made and to the dust you will return ” something like that , not to sure but that give me an idea that all those precious minerals such as calcium for our bones and some other minerals that we depend on everyday , were drift and spread out truth into this limitless universe , so... The question is there . wich obviously we all know that earth is our home and so special for all those elements around us, but. Where are we really from?. Or where is our closest neighbors?.
