Gmail, the conspiracy theory
I was telling my friend today to send me pictures to "my gmail," suddenly the poetry gland in my head (consists of 5 confused neurons) started firing and told me "that rhymes with e-mail."
And then the conspiracy theory all became clear to me..
When Google chose the name of their e-mail service they purposely avoided using "Google Mail" or the extension @google.com. Instead they had to go with "gmail" which sounds like, yeah you know it, "e-mail"
So what Google wants to do is to change the internet lingo and base it around them. So people will start referring to e-mail as gmail. For example we will start saying "please gmail me?" or "don't gmail anyone at work."
I think I'm on to something here... or maybe the lack of sleep has effected me.

LOL! I totally love that theory. And ooh, that's a cool way to put it.. Around here, most people haven't heard of GMail yet, so I can rhyme it with email for ease of "giving". I totally LOVE my GMail...

Well, I wouldn't go as far as making it a conspiracy theory, but of course the choice of name was made so that people would start using it this way.
Everyone now says, send this to my gmail, or gmail it. That's very good marketing and insight.
It's sort of like when Hotmail was the biggest thing in the email world, people were hotmailing each other.

Omar, you should report to "mokhabarat" to ban gmail, this is a serious issue. Just kidding!.
Now here is a true conspiracy theory, Microsoft has a deal with the chinese government to block people from using words such as "democracy", "human rights", "freedom" ... etc. in its portal. Bloggers who enter these words will be given warnings, and who knows what happens next. The link is: http://www.iht.com/articles/2005/06/14/yourmoney/msft.php

That is SO true!
This is the only believable conspiracy theory I've read regarding GMail (and there is alot of them).
But Who Cares?!
I mean, in fairness, what does it matter if the lingo changes?
