Mouneh Time..... مونة تايم
Typical mouneh items include but certainly not limited to:
Mloukhieh: the main ingredient in a very popular Egyptian/Levantine dish.
Magdous: Eggplants stuffed with walnuts, red pepper, preserved in olive oil over the winter months.
Kousa (Zuchini): an important player in the mahashi category, which consists of vegetables such as eggplants, and red peppers stuffed with spiced rice and ground beef/lamb.
Pickles: although pickles are available year round in grocery stores, the taste is not the same as homemade pickles, plus can you even buy “lifit” pickles from here?
Flefleh hamra (red peppers): For use in mana`eesh and other reciepied, it’s usually dried in the sun, and placed in the freezer for the rest of the winter
Then there is all the garden herbs that mom dries such as thyme, rosemary, and mint.
All this talk about food got me hungry, I’m off to make ‘aasha (the last meal of the day, usually eaten around 9 o’clock, consisting mainly of TEA, labneh, magdous, cheese, olives and every dairy product known to man)

Thank you Omar and Om Omar (in particular) for helping in keeping the tradition of Mouneh alive. Despite all the changes that swept through, most people I know have 1 fridge and 1 freezer at home. The freezer has about 8 deep shelves and this is the time of year to start filling it with goodies for the winter, Mloukhieh, Bamieh, Fasoulia Khadra, Kemeh, Ardi Shawki, sbanegh, bazella, wara2 3inab ...etc.)
Great Maqdous and pickles. Sa77a Wa Hana.

queenie, I had fattet madous once before and I remember liking it. I'm going to ask my mom to make it now
anon. the recipie is actually quite complicated. It take tons of effort to make, but it's worth the while. perhaps I'll start a arabic food blog :D
thanks Gardenia
Yasser mouneh here is quite common with the Arab community. I guess it's a wat for them to feel like they're back home.
Abu fares how could I have forgotten the wara2 3inab?! We have 5 daliat in the house, so our wara2 is home grown as well. ou 3ala albak, itfadal..
sim, sorry, but at least I inspired to eat something good and healthy for iftar. Sa7a!
Thanks Amr :)
heroine, welcome and alla ykhalilik yaha
Ihsan, next time you come to Toronto, you're invited to my house for a big sa7in of magdous, ou ma7ashi kaman! sho ra2yak?
basel, alla 7ir7ama, the only person who cooks better than ones mom, is their grandma. It's a widely accepted theory ;)
Sorry Dina, I didn't think of people reading this post while fasting. BTW I told me mom about all the praise she got, and she was quite happy with the response :)
Asma, welcome and nice to see you back. Sa7a!
